How to tell your child you’re getting a divorce

There is a lot to think about as you move closer to divorce, as you realize that your life will no longer be the same.

While this is sure to impact you, don't overlook the way your child will feel. You need to be sure that he or she understands what's going on, and that you and the other parent will do whatever it takes to help him or her through this difficult time.

Here are some tips regarding how you should tell your child you're getting a divorce:

  • Think about the location and circumstances. Here's why this is important: Depending on your child's age, he or she may remember this conversation for the rest of his or her life.
  • Sit down with your soon to be ex-spouse to break the news. This is not always possible, but if it makes sense to do so, you should go down this path.
  • Be ready to answer any questions your child asks. It's not always easy to answer questions from your child in regards to divorce, but you need to do your best. Ignoring questions will only make the situation worse on all parties.
  • Provide support during and after the conversation. You don't want to tell your child you're getting divorced and then act like it never happened. You must continue to provide support well into the future.

These are just a few of the many tips that will work in your favor when telling your child you're getting a divorce. If you do these things, you'll feel more comfortable learning more about your legal rights and beginning the process.
