Don’t be surprised by these co-parenting challenges

The divorce process is every bit as challenging as it sounds. Adding to this, you can expect a bit more stress if you have at least one child with the individual.

Once your divorce is in the past, you'll still need to communicate with your ex-spouse to ensure that your child is always getting what he or she needs to thrive.

Here are some of the many co-parenting challenges that often move to the forefront:

  • Talking poorly about the other parent to your child
  • Deciding what's best for the child in regards to his or her education
  • Schedule changes, such as if the noncustodial parent needs to adjust his or her visitation times
  • A child who becomes upset because you won't let him or her do something that the other parent is okay with
  • Uncooperative ex-spouse, no matter how hard you try to make things work
  • A lack of consistency

These are just a few of the many co-parenting challenges that have the potential to get in your way and slow you down. While you're sure to face some of these, among others, you don't want to shy away from finding a solution. You need to work with the other parent to put the problem in the past.

In addition to working with the other parent to avoid co-parenting challenges, you should understand your legal rights. For instance, if you have a visitation schedule in place, both parents should do whatever it takes to stay on track. When you follow court orders, it's much easier to avoid some of the more serious issues.
