Take your time during separation and/or divorce

Couples in Maryland who decide to separate are often thrown into a period of uncertainty. In many cases, a separation is initiated before one or both spouses are completely committed to the idea of a divorce. This can lead to a high level of emotional distress as each partner considers the marriage and whether to reconcile or move forward with divorce. When moving through the process of separation, it is important to maintain the proper perspective, so that the best possible decision can be made.

One of the biggest mistakes that an individual can make during this phase is to rush through the decision-making process. Ending a marriage is a significant life event, and one that should never be taken lightly. It is imperative that each spouse takes the time they need to work through the issues within their marriage, and to determine which course of action is best. The same is true of the post-divorce stage, which will also take some time to adjust to.

During this period of time, it is equally important that both spouses understand the full range of ramifications for moving forward with divorce. This is accomplished by working with a divorce attorney to estimate any child support or alimony payments that will be a part of the divorce. It also includes gaining an estimation of how marital property would be divided, including retirement and investment savings.

As with any significant decision, the best way to move forward during a separation is to gain as much information as possible. Once a Maryland spouse is fully informed, he or she can make the decision that is best suited for his or her needs and goals. Meeting with a family law attorney, even prior to making the decision to separate or divorce, is an excellent way to learn more about the various options and expected outcomes.
